Besakih Temple

Besakih Temple located in the Besakih village, Rendang district, located in southwestern slopes of Mount Agung is the highest mountain in Bali. Access from Denpasar to reach this place is about 25 km to the north of the City Semarapura – Klungkung regency.

The journey to the Pura Besakih through panoramic Bukit Jambul is also one of the objects and attractions of Karangasem regency.

Location of Pura Besakih deliberately chosen in the village which is considered sacred because it was high, called Hulundang Basukih who later became the village of Besakih.

Besakih The name is taken from Sanskrit, wasuki or in Old Javanese basuki which means congratulations. In addition, the name of Besakih constituted also by mithologi Naga Basuki as a counterweight Mount Mandara.
Number of relics of megalithic era, such as menhirs, stone throne, pyramid terrace structure found in Pura Besakih complex shows that as a sacred place of Besakih seemingly came from a very old age, long before the influence of Hinduism.

Besakih Temple Complex is built on the balance of nature in the concept of Tri Hita Karana, where the setting is adjusted based on the direction of the wind for the building structure to represent nature as the symbolism of the balance. Respectively-each direction of the wind called the mandala with deities ruling called “Dewa Catur Lokapala” where the mandala center as its axis, so the fifth mandala manifested into “Panca Dewata”.
Pura Besakih translation structure based on the concept of the cardinal directions, are:

1. Upgrading Pura Agung Besakih as the center of the mandala in Central direction and is the largest temple of the existing temple, devoted to worship the god Ciwa;

2. Dark Temple on the east to worship the god IƧwara;

3. Pura Kiduling Kereteg in the south to worship Lord Brahma;

4. Ulun Kulkul in the west to worship the god Mahadeva;

5. Pura Batumadeg the North direction to worship the god Vishnu.
